Tough test awaits as Alty aim for fourth straight win - here's your match preview

By Joe Brayne

Red-hot Altrincham return to The J. Davidson Stadium this Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off), aiming to extend their Vanarama National League winning streak to four as they take on Aldershot Town.

The blockbuster Robins delivered another masterclass last Saturday, treating the TNT Sports cameras to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Oxford City at the RAW Charging Stadium.

The match burst into life with defender Jake Cooper's exquisite left-footed volley putting Alty ahead in only the seventh minute. The Hoops levelled the score at the start of the second half, but pressure from the Robins in the final third paid off when Eddy Jones finished off smart build-up play between Justin Amaluzor and Chris Conn-Clarke for an 80th-minute winner.

Speaking to the TNT crew, Altrincham manager Phil Parkinson was delighted with the result on the road.

“In both boxes, we were more clinical, offensively and defensively,” he said. “After the goal, they were on top of us in the first half, but it swung for us in the second half.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to my assistant, Neil Sorvel. He does a lot of work creating brilliant patterns of play, and you can see it coming off (for the second goal). We put hours of work into them, and that is not luck.”

About the Opposition

Aldershot, who finished just one spot below us in the National League last season, have embarked on a similarly strong start to their 2023-24 campaign.

Currently situated in 10th place, trailing Alty by three points, the Shots have lost just once in their last six matches – a razor-close 2-1 defeat on the road to promotion contenders Barnet.

Robins’ winger Amaluzor will face his former side on Tuesday, having sparkled for them last season under the tutelage of manger Tommy Widdrington.

Replacing Justin, young talent Josh Stokes has seamlessly transitioned into the Aldershot line-up. The 19-year-old has made a significant impact, leading the Shots' scoring chart with an impressive seven goals in just 13 matches.

Altrincham must also be prepared to contend with Aldershot’s seasoned partnership on the right flank. The pair, featuring defender Aaron Jones and midfielder Tyler Frost, have spent almost every minute of the season playing together and pose a considerable threat.
