Tony Sanders is heading back down Moss Lane this Saturday!
HIS name is inextricably linked with a success story unmatched in Altrincham's entire history, and he is making his way back down Moss Lane this Saturday as guest of honour of the club.
Quietly spoken but with a clear plan of action and steely determination to make it work, Tony Sanders took the managerial reins at Alty in March 1976 and oversaw an eight-year period of unparalleled success that well and truly put us on the map and established the Robins as non-League's greatest FA Cup giantkillers.
The golden years were between 1978 and 1982, starting with a Wembley FA Trophy triumph over Leatherhead and including an inaugural Alliance Premier League title in 1979-80 and an unforgettable League and League Cup double the following season.
In between all the silverware, an unrivalled reputation for Cup giantkilling was forged, as Sanders' side tucked one Football League scalp after another under their belts and crossed swords with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham.
It was a time when legends were made on the pitch, most notably John King's marauding presence in midfield, Barry Howard's wing wizardry and John Rogers' prolific goalscoring up front.
Off the pitch, Tony was the mastermind, and the club are delighted that he is able to join us as our guest as we return to action after a two-week break to face Southend United in the Vanarama National League on Saturday.
As a bonus for Alty fans, Tony has agreed to sit down with press and media officer Brian Flynn before kick-off for an in-depth AltyTV interview that will be screened at some point after the game.
Brian, who was instrumental in liaising with Tony over a suitable date for visiting us again, intends covering as much ground as possible in what promises to be a fascinating insight into the great man and how he went about establishing Alty as the nation’s leading exponents of Cup upsets.
As we look forward to catching up with Tony again, don't forget you can still buy tickets for what should be another enthralling, action-packed afternoon at The J.Davidson Stadium by clicking here.
