Half-Time Report - Ged’s 215 Mile Coast-to-Coast Run

Words Brian Flynn

Former Altrincham midfielder, Ged Kielty will reach the halfway point in his epic 215-mile coast to coast run today.

The 49-year-old is raising money for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation in memory of his former Alty teammates, Mark Maddox & George Melling, who we lost to this dreadful incurable disease.

Read Ged’s mid-term progress report:

“I set off from Hornsea on the east coast of Yorkshire on Wednesday morning, running 44 miles to Saltmarshe, which is on the River Ouse, near Goole, in blistering heat, through some stunning scenery.

“I ran 42 miles on Day 2 (Thursday) in similar conditions finishing near Tilts, which is four miles north of Doncaster. A tough day but I’m feeling good, considering the mileage I’ve done.

“I’m running solo but have received phenomenal support from Ben Lockett, the owner of Twisted Running and Paul Gibbon, a fellow runner at Twisted Running."

“Ben has driven me to the starting point each day and then home again in the evening, so I’m able to sleep in my own bed each night!

“Ben & Paul have taken turns to cycle next to me for large parts of the run, which has been fantastic.”

Ged set off at 6am today (Friday), returning to Tilts, before attacking the Pennines. It will be another tough day in the heat, with the added challenge of huge elevation.

“Running for The Darby Rimmer MND Foundation & thinking about Mark & George keeps me going through the tough times.”

Ged is hoping to complete his mammoth trip on Sunday, with his final destination being Southport.
