Alty and World Mental Health Day

On this World Mental Health Day we're taking a look at the important work being done behind the scenes with our men's and women's teams to help them prepare for the challenges they face each week.

  • Psychotherapist Milly Peel works as part of Phil Parkinson's men's first team squad backroom team as well as running Stable Minds in Knutsford
  • Psychologist Helen Carouzos is based in Bowdon and works with Altrincham FC Women

The Power Of Small Wins with Milly Peel

In football, we celebrate the big moments. A last-minute goal, a vital three points, a big performance on the pitch. But what often gets overlooked are the small wins that make those moments possible.

The same is true for our mental health. Looking after ourselves does not always mean big changes or dramatic decisions.

More often, it is the little choices we make each day that build resilience and help us feel more in control.

Small wins can look different for everyone. For some, it might be taking time to rest properly after a long week. For others, it might be opening up to a friend, stepping away from social media when it feels too much, or even just getting outside for some fresh air. On their own, they might seem minor, but together they make a huge difference.

As Head Psychotherapist here at Altrincham FC, I see the importance of those small wins with the players. Consistency, routine and small positive habits help build clarity and confidence, both on and off the pitch. The same applies to all of us. You do not need to wait for a crisis to check in with yourself or to make a positive change.

At Stable Minds, our approach has always been about meeting people where they are. That could mean counselling sessions, joining one of our groups, or just dropping into our Knutsford walk-in hub for a cup of tea and a chat. Whatever feels manageable in that moment is enough – and often it is those small steps that lead to the biggest shifts.

So as the season builds, celebrate the big results, but also notice the small wins in your own life. They are just as important and just as worth recognising.

And as always, if you see me around the ground, feel free to say hello or ask any questions about mental health or Stable Minds. Sometimes even a quick chat can make a real difference.

Helen Carouzos on her work with Altrincham FC Women

I'm a counselling psychologist and ADHD coach and I've been delivering training to Altrincham FC Women every couple of weeks, with the theme depending on the feedback I receive from the players and coaching staff.

Last week we spoke about managing feedback more effectively, and how this can make a difference to the players' performance.

I also work with the players one-to-one for confidential counselling and/or life coaching for any personal and/or football related issues impacting their mental health and wellbeing, which can in turn impact their performance on the pitch.

I have been going to watch the women's team play when I can and it was fantastic to be there in person to see their Women's FA Cup win at Stockton Town last Sunday.

I also work with current and ex sports people, in particular footballers and provide ADHD coaching for adults, both in sport and outside of sport.
