FA Cup Memories - Day 4: Wigan Toppled, Spurs Await

FA Cup Memories – Day 4

From Moss Lane to White Hart Lane

Altrincham 1–0 Wigan Athletic • FA Cup Second Round • 3rd December 1994

Old rivals met again at Moss Lane on a cold December afternoon in 1994. Altrincham and Wigan Athletic - managed by ex-Alty hero Graham Barrow - had once been non-league heavyweights together, but by the mid-nineties the Latics were firmly established in the Football League. They travelled as favourites for this Second Round tie.

John King’s Robins, though, had a long FA Cup tradition of bloodying noses, and in front of a crowd of 3,020 they rose once more to the occasion. The decisive moment came from Chris Sharratt, whose strike sealed a famous 1–0 win and sent the ground into raptures.

“One goal, all heart — and a Third Round ticket to White Hart Lane.”

The reward was as glamorous as they come: a trip to Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane, where Teddy Sheringham and Jürgen Klinsmann led the line. Wigan were left stunned, while Alty supporters treasured another addition to their proud catalogue of Cup upsets.
