LEWIS Baines has been handed the captain's armband to lead Altrincham into another eagerly-awaited season in the Vanarama National League.

The countdown is well and truly underway for the launch of a campaign rich in promise after an outstanding fourth-place finish for the Robins last season and the arrival of five new recruits during the summer months.

With the opening fixture just days away, the only issue still to be resolved was the captaincy, and Lewis' ever-dependable presence as a pillar of strength at the heart of Alty's defence helped make him a worthy choice in the eyes of manager Phil Parkinson.

Explaining the decision to make Lewis club captain, in succession to James Jones, Phil said: "We felt he really flourished in the role at the back end of last season, showing great leadership qualities on and off the pitch.

"He is someone who really wants it, and it certainly looks like having the armband has enhanced his performances. It has made him grow as a person as well.

"There were several other really strong candidates for the captaincy, which I can't say has always been the case since we went full-time.

"The leadership in the group is looking really strong, and there were some outstanding candidates in the likes of Elliot Osborne and Isaac Marriott, but I feel it's time for Lewis to take the role on.

"With James Jones, he had a tricky time of it with injuries last season, and I just want him to focus solely on himself and his performances. It's a pivotal year coming up for James, and I don't want him to have any distractions.

"Also, I felt it was the right time for Lewis to take that mantle, and I'm sure he will do a great job with it."

A delighted Lewis made it clear he is relishing his new role, saying: "I've loved every minute of playing for Alty, so to be made captain of this great club is an honour I'm really proud of.

"I want to thank the gaffer for showing faith in me and giving me this responsibility, and I can assure everyone I will be doing my utmost to repay him.

"These are exciting times for the club, and I can't wait for the season to get underway and see where it takes us. It feels great to be made captain, but I'll take it in my stride and keep striving to improve game-on-game."

Signed from Chorley just over two years ago, experienced centre-back Lewis has consistently shown the levels of drive and determination needed to be an effective leader throughout his time at The J.Davidson Stadium, and everyone at the club would like to congratulate him on his appointment and wish him every success in the role.
