IT'S Day Seven in our series of pen pics for Stuart Coburn's testimonial, and we are now turning our attention to the players who will make up the Alty 2014 squad that will do battle with their 2005 counterparts at The J.Davidson Stadium on Sunday July 28th.
The match, kindly sponsored by Jones Contracts, kicks off at 3.30pm, with the Golf Road turnstiles opening at 2.30pm, and Stuart is hoping to see as many of you there as possible, not only to share a special occasion with so many of his former team-mates but to support his chosen charity for the afternoon, the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.
Tickets are only £5 for adults and £2 for under-18s, and they can be purchased here. Let's have a look at the first four players lined up from the 2014 squad, with more to follow over the rest of the week.
ADAM GRIFFIN - a compact and accomplished left-back who started his career in the Football League with Oldham Athletic in 2001 and made 62 appearances for them before joining Stockport County in 2006, where he played 70 times over the following two years.
Adam joined Alty from Hyde in December 2013 after a spell with Darlington and a second stint with County, where he was their player of the year in 2010-11.
First choice at left-back from the word go, he made 28 appearances for us in the second half of what was a memorable debut season that culminated in promotion to the Conference National via the play-offs.
In total, he made 125 appearances for Alty and scored one goal - and what a goal it was, at home to Eastleigh on Saturday September 13th 2014!
The scores were tied at 1-1 in the 35th minute when skipper Peter Cavanagh looked up from near the touchline on the Pop Side and launched a long crossfield pass over towards the far corner of the penalty area, where Adam watched it all the way on to his left foot before thundering a first-time volley past a startled keeper and into the top corner of the net.
Eastleigh equalised for a second time to make it 2-2, but that stunning strike by Adam was rightly voted Alty's goal of the season.
JAMES LAWRIE - capped at under-21 level by Northern Ireland, James was a stylish, talented attacker who won a goal-of-the-season award with his first club Port Vale.
After a season with AFC Telford United, he joined Alty at the end of August 2011 in an initial one-month loan move that was extended and eventually made permanent after he scored four goals in his first 11 appearances.
Everyone vividly remembers Greg Wilkinson's last-gasp winner at the end of extra time whenever the May 2014 play-off final against Guiseley is mentioned, but recollections of Alty's opening goal in their 2-1 victory might not be quite so clear. It was scored by James, with a low drive just inside the post in the 51st minute.
It was another goalscoring contribution that arguably did even more to cement his place in the affections of Robins fans, when we took on fierce local rivals Macclesfield Town at The J.Davidson Stadium on Tuesday, September 30th 2014.
A predictably tight and tense encounter was goalless going into the 90th minute when James allowed a throw-in from Shaun Densmore out on the right to loop over his shoulder as he turned and unleashed an angled left-foot volley from fully 35 yards that flew through the night air on its way into the top corner of the Macc net for a famous 1-0 Alty derby win.
DANNY HALL - very much in the mould of a footballing central defender who was always comfortable with the ball at his feet, Danny earned his first professional contract with Oldham Athletic in 1999 and made 64 first-team appearances for them between 2002 and 2006.
After spells with a variety of clubs, he joined Alty from Hyde in May 2012, and his ability to bring the ball out of defence and set up attacks with his pinpoint distribution soon became apparent, not only to Robins followers but across the Pennines, too, as Danny Bower snapped him up soon after taking over as manager of Guiseley in 2013.
Danny was back at Alty for a brief time in September 2016, but he was released two months later after just three starts and one appearance as substitute, making it 44+4 overall, with one goal scored.
KYLE PERRY - it's fair to say Birmingham-born larger-than-life striker Kyle packed plenty into an eventful career, turning out for no fewer than 26 different clubs, some of them more than once, over the course of 20 years.
His time at Alty started in May 2013 when manager Lee Sinnott signed him from Nuneaton Town. He scored 12 goals in 38 league games in his first season en route to an unforgettable Conference North play-off final at a packed J.Davidson Stadium, where he endeared himself to Alty fans with a typically-robust challenge on Guiseley keeper Steven Drench that led to the ball bobbling loose for Greg Wilkinson to thread it through the narrowest of gaps for a 120th-minute winner.
If he wasn't the most fleet-footed ever to pull on an Alty jersey, he was a wholehearted, effective target man and a real character whose ready wit and outgoing personality made him hugely popular with everyone who encountered him.
