Robins ready for away clash in Essex

Alty are faced with another challenging away trip as we travel to the Roots Hall to play Southend United in the Vanarama National League on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Setting the Scene

Altrincham produced one of the performances of the season in our previous game, as the Robins beat title challengers York City 2-1 away from home.

An early header from Lewis Baines deflected off Josh Stones to give Alty an early lead, but a superb curling strike from Alex Hunt levelled the game almost immediately after half-time. York enjoyed the majority of possession, but Altrincham always looked dangerous on the counter, and substitute Justin Amaluzor put Alty back ahead with a clever finish late in the game.

The three points earned on Tuesday leave Altrincham in seventh, just five points behind fourth place, with a couple of games in hand. Our hosts on Saturday sit just three places further back in 10th and will be looking to close the six-point gap that currently exists between us.

The Shrimpers are unbeaten in their last six league games and have been in impressive form since Christmas. Their right back, Gus Scott-Morris, is joint fourth in the goalscoring charts with 15, and with only one home defeat in their previous nine, Southend will provide Alty a tough contest at the weekend.

Phil Parkinson on this weekend's challenge

“It’s going to be a massive game for us because it’s one of the toughest places we go. It’s one of, if not, the longest journeys we do, and it feels like a big slog every time we go there.

“Kev sets his teams up brilliantly, he’s a top manager. He’s somebody we’re fiercely competitive with, as much as I’m giving him compliments I’m sure we’ll be at each other’s throats at the weekend, but he’s superb at what he does.

“We’re going to have to be right on it to get anything at Southend.”

Earlier this season

November 2024 – Alty secured all three points in the last meeting between the sides as they came away 2-0 victors in November at The J.Davidson Stadium.

An early goal for Joe Nuttall was followed by another first-half goal from Alex Newby to help Altrincham win, in front of 2,536.
