Captain Crawford secures three points for the Robins
Altrincham FC secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Eastleigh in their penultimate home game of the season. Tom Crawford’s first-half strike proved decisive, but loanee Luke Hutchinson’s series of excellent saves ensured a clean sheet and all three points.
Neil Gibson made two changes to the side beaten 2–1 by York City on Easter Monday. Ollie Crankshaw and Otis Khan made their first starts since returning from injury, while Tylor Golden and Charlie Kirk dropped to the bench.
Both sides started brightly, threatening from wide areas. Knowles delivered several dangerous balls from the left, but none found a finishing touch. At the other end, Aaron Blair’s low cross from the right evaded everyone in the box.
Hutchinson was first called into action with a superb close-range save to deny Harvey Saunders. Moments later, Joshua McNamara produced an equally impressive stop to prevent Liam Humbles from scoring after another dangerous delivery from Knowles.
The breakthrough came after 18 minutes. Following McNamara’s save, the rebound fell to Crawford, whose shot took a deflection and found the bottom-left corner.
Humbles continued to threaten, firing over from 20 yards, while Altrincham saw a strong penalty appeal waved away. Eastleigh looked to counter, but Matty Kosylo made an excellent last-ditch challenge to halt the attack.
Altrincham nearly doubled their lead before the break. Isaac Marriott’s perfectly weighted ball sent Crankshaw through, and his dinked cross to the back post somehow wasn’t converted. Crankshaw remained lively in stoppage time but couldn’t add to the scoreline, while Hutchinson comfortably saved Jack Baldwin’s free header to preserve the lead at half-time.
The hosts began the second half on the front foot. Humbles again tested McNamara from close range, and Khan fired straight at the goalkeeper from the edge of the area following the resulting corner. Humbles soon went close again, his low effort heading for the corner before Jayden Moore cleared.
Dan Sassi then forced another save from McNamara with a first-time volley, while Knowles fired wide after being picked out by an excellent pass from Humbles.
As the game entered its final 20 minutes, Hutchinson became increasingly busy, producing a crucial double save before Jake Cooper cleared the danger. Despite Eastleigh’s pressure, Altrincham continued to threaten on the counter. Crankshaw beat his man but saw his shot blocked, and Crawford later headed straight at McNamara from a corner.
Saunders twice came close to equalising, but Hutchinson denied him on both occasions. With memories of late goals conceded over Easter still fresh, there was tension as the game neared its conclusion. Once again, Hutchinson stood firm, making a superb save from Saunders’ header.
The only booking of the game went to Cooper in stoppage time, leading to a dangerous free kick. Substitute Lloyd Humphries saw his effort deflected, but Hutchinson reacted well to push it to safety.
Both sides had something to take from the match. While Altrincham celebrated victory, Eastleigh secured their Enterprise National League status for the 2026/27 season thanks to results elsewhere.
