Altrincham 1 Southend 3

Altrincham suffered a frustrating start to the new season after letting slip an early lead and being hit by a succession of second-half setbacks at a sweltering J.Davidson Stadium this afternoon.

The Robins looked to have a platform for opening their Enterprise National League account at the first time of asking when Tom Crawford expertly fired them ahead in the eighth minute.

But they were pegged back before half-time, and worse followed in the second 45 minutes as an error by keeper Owen Evans was punished by a second Southend goal and then Matty Kosylo was shown a second yellow card for a foul.

To add to Alty's woes, Harry Cardwell extended Southend's lead in the 85th minute, and, before the game could restart, Evans extended an already lengthy injury list by hobbling off to be replaced by new signing Andy Firth.

Kosylo sparked Alty's first meaningful attack in the third minute with a couple of brilliant sidesteps that took him cruising past two challenges and into the Southend half.

It was like a throwback to the makeshift right-back's halcyon days as an attacking midfielder, and when he threaded a pass through to Liam Humbles, Alty were very much on the front foot.

But when Humbles kept the move going by transferring it forward to Aidan Barlow, the subsequent ball into the area from the left just evaded Jimmy Knowles, whose claims he had been impeded fell on deaf ears.

If that was an example of Kosylo at his creative best, Humbles went one better soon after with a sliderule pass that led to the Robins taking an eighth-minute lead.

It was inch-perfect for Barlow, and when his firm left-foot shot was parried at full stretch by Southend keeper Joe Duncan, Robins skipper Crawford was on hand to squeeze the rebound through the narrowest of gaps.

Humbles was proving a thorn in Southend's side, and when he controlled the ball, spun round and accelerated in one dazzling movement midway through the first half, it propelled him on a run that was only halted by a cynical challenge that earned Southend defender Anthony Hartigan a yellow card.

Little had been seen of the visitors as an attacking force up to this point, but they should have been back on terms in the 24th minute when left-back Kyle McAdam lifted a stretching half-volley over the bar from an inviting position near the left corner of the six-yard box.

Alty drew more applause in the 34th minute when Kosylo combined superbly with Humbles to send Knowles scampering away down the right. It was a lovely, slick move, but the ball into the middle just missed its target and the chance was lost.

Out of nowhere, Southend dragged themselves level with an opportunist goal from Leon Parillon in the 37th minute.

The big Southend forward produced a clever piece of footwork to jink his way inside a challenge on the left, but there still seemed little threat to the Alty goal until he suddenly fired a low shot just  inside the near post.

Alty wasted no time trying to restore their lead and went close in the 39th minute when Crawford's first-time effort from a pass by Knowles looked bound for the top left corner until a deflection off a defender took it narrowly wide.

Crawford was prominent again in the 44th minute with a rasping drive from distance that brought the best out of Duncan, who went full length to touch it away from the top right corner.
There seemed cause for optimism in the Alty camp at the start of the second half, but it all turned sour when Evans delayed clearing his lines and paid a heavy price for it in the 53rd minute. Cardwell pounced on the hesitation by the Alty keeper, dispossessing him and cleverly teeing up skipper Oli Coker for a simple finish that put his side 2-1 up.

It was a stunning blow for the Robins, though Kosylo did his best to rally them on the hour by bursting into the box on the right but blazing over the bar.

Southend could count themselves fortunate in the 65th minute, when an awkwardly bouncing ball in their area struck right-back Vontae Daley-Campbell just above his right elbow. Manager Neil Gibson led the Alty penalty appeals, but referee Zac Kennard-Kettle was having none of it.

The official had another decision to make soon after, and again it went against the Robins as a challenge by Kosylo near the halfway line was deemed a bookable offence. The Alty player had already been cautioned and was therefore ordered off, leaving the Robins to go in pursuit of a point with 10 men.

That might have become an even taller order in the 74th minute but for Evans pulling off a fine double save, particularly the second from Sahid Kamara, and Parillon volleying the rebound over a gaping goal.

Alty's slim hopes of turning things round were dashed in the 85th minute when Cardwell added his name to the scoresheet to make it 3-1.

It owed everything to the ingenuity of Kamara, who twisted past a challenge before rolling a brilliant reverse pass into the path of Cardwell, who fired past an unprotected Evans. The Robins keeper was immediately substituted after appearing to have been in some discomfort from a lower leg injury for a while.

There was no way back for the Robins, as Southend made their numerical advantage count and comfortably saw out the remaining few minutes.
