Two goals and a clean sheet - Alty warm to their task in searing heat

Altrincham 2 Solihull 0

Goals from Kahrel Reddin and Lucas Weaver propelled Altrincham back to winning ways in sweltering August Bank Holiday temperatures at The J.Davidson Stadium this afternoon.

Such was the heat that the game was paused for the players to rehydrate midway through each half, but there was no respite for Solihull Moors as the Robins made amends for the disappointment of Saturday's last-gasp defeat at Morecambe.

Reddin smartly finished off a well-worked move to open the scoring in the first half, and Solihull could have few complaints when substitute Weaver sealed the victory with an accurate shot into the bottom left corner of Laurie Walker's net.

The margin of victory could easily have been wider, but it was a measure of the control exerted by the Robins that keeper Luke Hutchinson finished the game without once being seriously tested.

Tylor Golden's worth to Alty in an attacking sense as well as defensive was clear to see in only the ninth minute.

Jimmy Knowles and Isaac Marriott worked the ball across from the left to Golden, who skipped past two challenges before unleashing a shot that was deflected narrowly wide of the left post.

Three minutes later, the Robins fashioned a counter-attack that so nearly breached the Moors defence.

Sam Reed burst clear from deep and threaded the ball through to Reddin, whose first-time flick gave Marriott the chance to fire a left-foot shot that looked on-target until drifted fractionally wide of the right post at the last moment.

Alty had started brightly, but there was an anxious moment at the other end after quarter-of-an-hour when Ben Worman's shot from inside the area was deflected only a foot or so beyond the upright.

The pressure on the visitors gradually building, it came as no surprise when the opening goal went the way of the Robins in the 19th minute - and what a well crafted goal it was.

When the ball was worked from left to right, Golden took possession and delivered a cross to the far post that Knowles expertly headed back for Reddin to control with one touch and despatch emphatically past Walker with another to put his side in front.

Lewis Banks went close with a header from no more than six yards that was blocked two minutes later, as Alty looked to build on their advantage.

Two minutes after that, the Solihull defence was tested once more as Golden drove a shot that Walker clutched above his head.

At the midway point of the half, play was stopped for drinks, and no-one was more deserving of a cooling beverage than full-back Golden, who had tried his luck again just seconds earlier with another fine effort, this one sailing over.

While the versatile Golden was operating on the right, Alty were being served just as effectively on the other flank by impressive left-back Reed, who again powered forward in the 39th minute before clearing the bar with a well-struck shot.

Alty again almost doubled their lead in the 41st minute as Reddin tricked his way past his marker and drilled a shot that Walker did well to parry round the post for a corner.

Reddin's pace again troubled the Solihull defence on the hour as he left centre-back Alex Whitmore trailing in his wake with a lightning burst down the right, only for his cutback to elude the lunging boot of James Gale inside the six-yard box.

The Alty winger threatened again in the 65th minute as he latched on to a pass from Tom Crawford and jinked past a defender before curling a left-foot shot that forced a diving save from Walker.

Alty needed a second goal to be able to breathe a little easier, and Weaver delivered it in the 79th minute.

Marriott started it all with a lovely first touch that enabled Keaton Ward to tee up Weaver, who ploughed his way through one challenge before steadying himself and burying a low drive into the corner of the diving Walker's net for his first goal of the campaign.
