Ward magic fires Alty to second win in three days

Truro City 0 Altrincham 1

Keaton Ward's stunning volley was enough for Altrincham to record back-to-back victories in the Enterprise National League against a stubborn Truro City in Cornwall.

The Robins have now collected seven points from Neil Gibson's first three National League games in charge, have yet to concede a goal, and improved their league position to 15th while condemning The Tinners to bottom of the table.

A cagey, relatively low intensity first half produced little in the way of chances. Rekiel Pyke saw a header saved by Luke Hutchinson in the early exchanges, before a number of Alty corners were headed over by Dan Sassi and Lewis Baines.

James Gale managed to scramble the ball home off another set piece, but the forward was judged to have fouled Truro stopper Dan Lavercombe in the build up.

The second half saw a much more controlled and positive Alty take the initiative. Twice Kahrel Reddin went close in the opening minutes - a mix up by Lavercombe saw the keeper's blushes saved by a defender on the line, before the City number one saved smartly from a second Reddin shot.

Fresh changes midway through the second half gave Alty renewed vigour entering the final third of the game, and eventually the breakthrough came with nine minutes to play.

Eight minutes after his introduction from the bench, Ward was found lurking just outside the box and his first time half volley from 25 yards flew past Lavercombe and into the net.

Cue delirium among the 146 away fans clustered right behind the strike as Alty's players went to celebrate en masse.

It was a special strike. One deserving of winning any game, and after travelling the length of the country it was a goal and win hugely enjoyed by everyone of an Alty persuasion.
