Phil says a heartfelt thanks as talent-spotter supreme Bob announces his retirement

Altrincham are saying thanks and farewell to scout Bob McClement, who is retiring after years of putting his talent-spotting skills at the club's disposal.

Phil Parkinson is the latest Alty boss to benefit from Bob's keen eye for a player, and he was full of praise for a man who may keep a low profile but has contributed significantly to the Robins' success story in recent seasons.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Bob for all the years' service he’s given me and this football club," said Phil. "He’s been an integral part of my scouting team and key to the successful recruitment we’ve seen here over the past seven seasons.

"Without people like Bob, we wouldn’t have the inside knowledge and ability to know when to ‘pull the trigger’ on the gems in the lower divisions.

"A prime example of that would have to be Regan Linney. We looked at him for a couple of seasons, but it was Bob's judgement and keen eye that let me know when the right time was to sign him.

"Ones that slipped through the net that Bob picked out were Olly Crankshaw, when he was at Colne, and Paddy Lane, who was at Hyde and is currently at Portsmouth. I still kick myself that I didn’t move quickly enough to secure them when he recommended.

"Bob's seen it all, and we’ve benefitted massively from his years of experience, but all good things must come to an end. He's at a time in his life where football must take a backseat and his family and his health must come first.

"I have nothing but good memories of working with him and he’ll always be welcomed at The J.Davidson Stadium. Thanks Bob!"
