Golf Road exterior wall rebuild now complete

Work was recently completed to replace the exterior wall at the back of the Golf Road end of The J.Davidson Stadium.

The whole of the external wall has been replaced with a brand new structure, and the space between the wall and the Golf Road terrace has been cleared, including the removal of tree stumps and root systems.

Altrincham FC Co-Chair, Bill Waterson explains:

“The exterior wall had been in place for perhaps fifty years. It is quite likely that it is the original wall from the building of the Golf Road stand in the mid-sixties. Therefore, exploratory work for this project began before the COVID-19 pandemic with the wall identified as an area of improvement for Moss Lane.

The challenge we had was: ‘To what extent are earthworks supporting the Golf Road stand supported by the exterior wall? In other words, would taking down the exterior wall also collapse the stand?’

Fortunately, and somewhat ironically, the ground improvements carried out last year to the uneven surface of the Golf Road terrace confirmed that there would be no adverse effects if the exterior wall was replaced."

Fellow Co-Chair, Lawrence Looney, worked with the Premier League Stadium Fund to identify and apply for relevant grant funding, which was achieved for this project. The project cost was around £25,000, of which grant money covered roughly 50%.

Stadium Director, Mark Luby, identified a contractor to complete the works over five days at the end of January 2023. Mark has taken on the stadium-focused role following the recent departure of Chris Hamlett from our Board of Directors.

With this work complete, we are now able to reopen the pavement to pedestrian access and thus, we are also able to open the turnstiles at the bottom of the Golf Road end.

The attractive football played by Alty under Phil Parkinson is seeing bigger and bigger crowds flock to The J.Davidson Stadium, most recently, a crowd of 4,865 for the visit of Wrexham. We are looking at a programme of further improvements for 2023 and beyond, recognising that we need to improve the ground and the facilities across the board. These works will be prioritised based on a number of criteria including spectator safety, EFL requirements, available funds and financial business cases.
