Darlington 5-2 Altrincham match report
Words by Loui Williams
The young Robins season began this Wednesday with a long away trip to Darlington. Alty started positively with some good passing moves starting out from the back and some great build-up play. However, an over-the-top ball would catch Alty flat footed leading the Darlington striker in behind who placed it in the bottom right, giving Darlington the lead.
However, the players got their heads up quickly and regained their previous grip on the game.
An equaliser would soon come which started with a Sam Chambers ball out to the right-hand side, a jumble up between the Darlington goalkeeper and Centre back was pounced on by Alty right winger Tom Jones who poked it home making it 1-1.
Unfortunately, the lads could not manage to keep the game level for long as around 10 minutes later Darlington made a quick break from an Alty attack getting the ball out wide which was subsequently whipped into the box and guided into the back of the net, just a few minutes before half time.
Alty were hoping to have a positive start to the second half but again Alty would punish themselves with mistakes, as Darlington took a 3-1 lead early in the second half.
This would become a recurring theme throughout this game as around ten minutes later another Alty mistake led to a Darlington free kick which eventually found the back of the net setting the score at 4-1.
Keeping a fighting spirit Alty would carry on working hard, no matter the score. Their efforts would see a reward in the form of a consolation goal, as Sam chambers played a long ball out to Alty left winger Loui Williams who drove inside and placed his shot in the bottom right corner from just outside the 18-yard box to make the score 4-2.
Alty would find success throughout the game with their midfield, with solid performances from Owen German and Sam Chambers. Alty would also find consistent success out wide with Tom Jones on the right and later in the game down the left. Substitutes Ollie Dixon, Sheriff Njie, Edson Cata and Sekouba Camera all had positive cameos and helped Alty create some good attacking opportunities.
Due to Alty desperately seeking another goal in the last few minutes of the game, the robins were caught high up the pitch in transition. Darlington would play one long ball up top and seal the deal with their fifth and final goal of the game.
