Altrincham vs Yeovil match preview
Words by Joe Ward
Alty return to The J.Davidson Stadium on Saturday where we host Yeovil Town in the Vanarama National League (3pm kick-off).
The match promises to be tightly contested as both teams continue to search for their first win of the new campaign.
On the same day the club’s crowdfunding campaign was launched, the Robins were left frustrated on Tuesday night after making our second lengthy trip down south in the space of just four days, however this time with nothing to show for it going down 2-0 at Maidenhead United.
Yeovil also lost their first midweek match of the season at home to Barnet. Despite defender Jamie Reckord pulling one back for Town in the 80th minute, it proved to be too little too late as they were beaten 2-1 at Huish Park.
Both teams will come into this game looking for the three points to kick start their seasons and that will make for an excellent game on Saturday.
Team News
Alty boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed goalkeeper Matt Gould suffered a concussion during the Bromley game last Saturday.
In a post-match interview with Bryan Flynn, he said: “He’s concussed and he’s going to have a CT scan in hospital. Hopefully it’s good news and it is just a blow to the head.”
“I thought our medical team deserved a lot of credit the way they came on and dealt with it superbly. But really pleased with Gouldy’s bravery in that one moment where he’s come into a crowd and dealt with it but unfortunately, he’s come out worse in the collision.”
Following the incident, Manchester United prospect Dermot Mee joined on loan and the 19-year-old made his debut on Tuesday night.
The under-19 Northern Ireland international will once again be available for this Saturday’s match whilst the club continues to do everything we can to have Oliver Byrne’s move from Connah’s Quay officially approved.
Ross Barrows came through 45 minutes with the reserves in midweek and it is hoped the summer signing can join the squad for this game.
About The Opposition
Yeovil Town, who previously spent 16 years in the Football League, were relegated to the National League during the 2018/19 season and have since remained a solid competitor, finishing 12th last season just four points above Alty.
This year saw the appointment of new manager Chris Hargreaves back in May, signing a two-year contract with the club.
The former Torquay United gaffer has made some good signings this summer including the likes of Jamie Reckord, Ben Richards-Everton and Alex Fisher. However, the departure of last seasons top scorer, Tom Knowles, has left them struggling to find the net at the start of this new campaign.
The Somerset side have only managed one draw so far this season albeit against Wrexham and will certainly hope to stop Alty from picking up our first win of the season on Saturday.
