Alty host last year's runners-up Wrexham next in the FA Trophy Fourth Round

By Joe Ward

It's a break from Vanarama National League action for Alty on Friday as we take on last year's runners-up Wrexham in the Fourth Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy (7.45pm kick-off).

Following last Saturday's postponement with Bromley, Alty are back at The J.Davidson Stadium for our first home fixture of 2023.

Last time out in the FA Trophy, Toby Mullarkey confirmed the Robins' progression to the Fourth Round with a late winner against Curzon Ashton. The skipper made the headlines that night, scoring the only goal in a game which Alty could have won by two or three more.

Nevertheless, the victory acted as a springboard for Phil Parkinson's men over the next couple of fixtures, launching us into the New Year unbeaten in eight consecutive games following outstanding back-to-back performances against FC Halifax Town.

Similarly, Wrexham head into Friday's fixture boasting their own unbeaten run of 19 games in all competitions. Substitute James Jones made an instant impact in their last match, scoring the winner against Bromley 16 minutes from time, having just come off the bench.

About The Opposition

Promotion-chasing Wrexham are arguably more accustomed to the glitz and glamour of the media spotlight than most other sides in the FA Trophy, having reached the final three times in the last 10 years.

They lost 1-0 to Bromley last May, in front of 46,111 spectators at Wembley, and suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak at the hands of North Ferriby United in a nail-biting finale back in 2015.

The 2013 final will be a much happier memory for Wrexham fans, though, after the Red Dragons beat Grimsby Town to win the competition on the club's first visit to Wembley in their 149-year history.

Alongside an incredible run of form in the league, Wrexham have also performed well in this season's FA Trophy, coming from behind to beat Scunthorpe United 3-1 in the Third Round.

It's hard to predict what sort of team Wrexham's very own Phil Parkinson will put out, however. The postponement of their next scheduled league game against Chesterfield gives them some breathing space in a congested fixture list, but Parkinson may well be wary of over-exerting key players as his side chase league leaders Notts County for a shot at automatic promotion.
