Torquay United v Altrincham match preview
Words by Joe Ward
Alty return to Vanarama National League action on Saturday following a run of cup fixtures when we travel to Plainmoor to take on Torquay United (5:20pm kick-off).
Following our defeat in the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday night, The Robins will look to pick themselves up and dust themselves off as we redirect our focus onto the National League where we face bottom of the table Torquay United.
Despite a frustrating result, Alty can take many positives into Saturdays fixture, and not least with striker Marcus Dinanga making it five goals in as many games in our 2-1 defeat away from home at Gateshead.
For our hosts, the FA Cup fixtures seemed to have come as a bit of a blessing as they broke a run of seven games without a win on Tuesday night, beating National League South opponents Hampton & Richmond 2-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying replay.
Not only does the win set up an exciting draw for The Gulls, who now face League One side Derby County in the First Round Proper, but it also breathes some much-needed life back into our hosts who will look to break their winless curse at home in the league.
About The Opposition
Torquay United are currently bottom of the National League table, picking up just nine points from their opening 13 games and still in pursuit of their first home win of the campaign.
The Gulls finished 11th last season, 11 points above Alty, however it’s been a difficult start to the new term for manager Gary Johnson after losing both of last season’s top scorers during the summer; Armani Little and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans.
Despite bringing in several attacking players to fill the boots left behind by the previous strikers, United have seriously struggled in front of goal this season scoring only nine in the league.
Their top scorer being 20-year-old Will Goodwin who joined from Stoke U21’s on loan. The forward has netted three times so far this season and will hope to extend that number against us on Saturday.
We can expect the home side to come out all guns blazing as they desperately look to climb out of the bottom four but with a growing list of injuries and poor run of form in the league, Saturday could be our chance to continue to push on to the top half of the Vanarama National League table.
