Maidenhead United vs Altrincham match preview
Alty are back in Vanarama National league action on Tuesday night as we travel to Maidenhead United for our second away fixture in the space of just four days (7:45pm kick-off).
The Robins head to York Road unbeaten in their opening two fixtures after an inspiring performance on Saturday drawing 0-0 away to Bromley, despite playing the final half an hour without goalkeeper Matt Gould.
Altrincham dominated in the first half, battling 34-degree heat on an artificial surface that made for almost intolerable conditions.
Aaron Bennett came close to scoring just before the break but was denied by the hands of Reice Charles-Cook. The Bromley keeper was once again called into action late in the second half as he stopped Chris Conn-Clarke’s effort from giving Alty all three points.
Overall, Phil Parkinson will take plenty of positives into our third game of the season following a resolute defensive performance which denied a single goal-bound effort to test either Gould or Hulme.
Maidenhead United go into Tuesday with a win and a loss in their first two games, dropping points to Notts County on the opening day as they lost 3-0 away from home, and beating Scunthorpe United 3-2 at home last Saturday.
Manager Views
In a post-match interview with Brian Flynn, the gaffer Phil Parkinson gave his reaction following our 0-0 draw against Bromley.
He said: “I thought, in the first half, we were absolutely superb in really difficult conditions.
‘It was unbearable out there. It was as hot as I have ever experienced, and I don’t know how the lads managed to get through it. But we dealt with it, and I thought the lads conducted themselves brilliantly.
“There aren’t many teams who will come here and dominate like we did in the first half. It was us who had the chance to win the game - we were the ones with the gilt-edged scoring opportunities.”
About The Opposition
Maidenhead United finished in 17th place last season in the National League, safe from a relegation battle and just four points behind Alty.
The Magpies re-appointed their current manager, Alan Devonshire, in 2015 after previously managing the club for several years between 1996 and 2003. At the time of the re-appointment, Maidenhead were competing in the National League South but were later promoted to the National League in 2016-17 where they have remained ever since.
Maidenhead lost 3-0 on their opening game of the 2022/23 season away to Notts County, following a dominant display by the home side which gave the travelling Maidenhead fans very little to shout for.
However, in a revitalised performance last Saturday on home soil, Maidenhead beat former League Two side Scunthorpe United 3-2 due to a rampant first half performance.
They went into the break 3-0 up following goals from Emile Acquah, Will De Havilland and skipper Kane Ferdinand. The second half on the other hand saw Maidenhead punished for their complacency as they conceded a goal from a penalty in the 47th minute and a second goal just minutes before the final whistle.
The main goal threat could come from striker Emile Acquah who joined the Magpies this season from Southend. The 22-year-old looked close to doubling his tally a few times on Saturday and will hope to continue his form against us on Tuesday night.
