First round memories - Barnsley chopped!

With Alty about to head south for Saturday's Emirates FA Cup encounter with Slough Town, we look back at some of our memorable first-round exploits from previous seasons. Today, it's Barnsley's visit to The J.Davidson Stadium on November 7th 2015.

Lee Sinnott's finest hour-and-a-half as Alty manager, or certainly one of them, this richly-deserved win over League One Barnsley was widely acknowledged as the upset of the 2015-16 first round.

Jake Moult set the tone early on with a firmly-struck half-volley from distance that needed a smart tip-over from the Barnsley keeper, and when the Alty midfielder followed up with a second near-miss soon after, there was the scent of another addition to the Robins' catalogue of Cup conquests in the air.

The all-important breakthrough against a side 45 places above Alty in the football pyramid came in the opening minute of the second half, at the end housing increasingly disgruntled Barnsley fans.

Ryan Crowther stole possession just inside the Barnsley half and set off for goal, head down and determined to weave his way towards the area and create a shooting opportunity for himself.

When the keeper could only parry the resulting left-foot effort with an outstretched hand, Damian Reeves was perfectly placed, instinct serving him flawlessly as it always did, to slide the loose ball into an empty net.

It was a lead the Robins never really looked like relinquishing, for all the visitors' late efforts to draw level, and Alty boss Sinnott hailed yet another example of Moss Lane playing host to FA Cup heroics by saying:

“I’m pleased it’s been rekindled - it’s been a while since Altrincham, a brilliantly traditional name in the FA Cup, have shown everyone it’s still there.

“We have some elderly supporters who remember those games in the 80s. It’s nice to see it’s come back for people like that. The greatest thing we’ve shown today is grit - that’s what we needed to go through."

With the national press in attendance, sensing perhaps another famous Alty triumph against the odds, the vice-presidents' lounge had to be pressed into action as a makeshift post-match interview room for the two managers.

Barnsley's Lee Johnson promised a major overhaul of his under-performing squad - if he wasn't sacked first, he added as a nod towards the pressure mounting on him.

"I'm angry with the situation," said Johnson, who lasted another couple of months at Oakwell before leaving to take over at Bristol City. "We need to shake it up, and if I'm still here, as people obviously keep questioning, I'll be the one to shake it up, for sure."

In the second round, the following month, Alty pushed Colchester United all the way at the Weston Homes Community Stadium and looked the better side for much of the tie before bowing out 3-2 to a goal in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time.
