Co-Chairman Bill Waterson on the upcoming season
Words Bill Waterson
JUST 10 short weeks ago, 750 of us stood with heads bowed in South East London as a fantastic season came to an end for the Robins. I know I shook the hands of many of our travelling army that day as we filed out of the stadium in Bromley, and we were proud of what we had achieved.
Fourth in the National League and just one game away from the play-off final. It was a season that had started the previous July with well over 200 of us making the trip to Nijmegen in the Netherlands for our first ever friendly in mainland Europe.
And now the new season is almost upon us – one month today we kick off the new campaign at The J. Davidson Stadium against long standing rivals Woking.
The release of the fixture list makes the arrival of the new season almost tangible and brings a sharper focus to our preparations. The regular season will finish on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5th with another home game, newly promoted Tamworth the visitors.
And the season certainly starts with a bang – the end of August sees our near neighbours Oldham Athletic visiting us, a mouth-watering prospect so early in the campaign. And in a change to the holiday fixtures, we play opponents in a pairing of Christmas and Easter. We welcome FC Halifax Town on Boxing Day and travel to The Shay on Easter Monday. New Years Day sees us in Rochdale with the return fixture on Good Friday.
There is so much to look forward to in the coming campaign – take a good look at
the fixtures and pick out your own favourites, whether it be against National League stalwarts such as Barnet and Gateshead or teams making their return to this league such as Forest Green Rovers and Yeovil Town.
Yes, pick out your favourites, but do make sure you get your tickets. Season Tickets are still on sale and are heading, once again for a new record for this season. And tickets for individual games will be going on sale over the coming days. And watch out for the ten-match ticket heading our way soon.
Last season saw us attract an average of 2,340 to The J. Davidson Stadium in
league games, a new National League record for the club. And your support made a huge difference for us - Alty notched 14 wins, scoring at will with 6-1 victories over Ebbsfleet United, York City and playoff rivals Solihull Moors.
Could this be the season where the path to the Football League is open to us? Will the Robins achieve new heights? Come and find out, come and make the
difference.
