Alty off to Derbyshire to face promotion-chasing Spireites

By Joe Ward

Alty are back in Vanarama National League action on Tuesday night as we make the relatively short trip to the Technique Stadium to take on Chesterfield (7:45pm kick-off).

Following a mammoth trip to Huish Park last Saturday, players, staff and fans were left massively frustrated as the match was postponed just over an hour before kick-off.

Nevertheless, Phil Parkinson will have little trouble focusing his players' attention on Tuesday night as we look to continue our impressive run of form in the league.

For the hosts, they head into Tuesday's fixture off the back of a heavy 4-0 defeat, albeit to West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup last week.

About The Opposition

In 2018 Chesterfield were relegated to the National League, leading to the club playing outside the English Football League for the first time since 1921.

Despite another relegation battle back in 2020, the Spireites seemed to have turned things around this season under manager Paul Cook, currently sitting in fourth place, having won eight of their last 10 league games.

However, following back-to-back postponements against Wealdstone and Notts County respectively, the hosts haven't played a league game since New Year's Day in which they decisively beat struggling Scunthorpe United 4-1 at home.

Cook, who previously led the Derbyshire side to a League Two title in 2014 during his first stint at the club, will be looking to recreate his side's heroics during our previous meeting this season.

Despite Toby Mullarkey opening the scoring just before half-time, two goals in quick succession from Chesterfield saw the visitors narrowly win 2-1 at The J.Davidson Stadium back in August.

Nevertheless, much has changed since then and, if form is anything to go by, the hosts will have to work hard to keep out an Alty side which doesn't look like slowing down anytime soon.
