Altrincham v Aldershot Town match preview

Words by Joe Ward

Alty are back at The J.Davidson Stadium on Saturday when we face Aldershot Town in the Vanarama National League (3pm kick-off).

The Robins will once again need your incredible support as we look to bounce back following last week’s defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge down South.

Saturday could prove to be a major turning point for Phil Parkinson and the team as we look to secure our first win of the season against 18th-placed Aldershot Town.

However, it will be no easy feat as the visitors will look to continue winning ways following their 5-1 victory last time out to FC Halifax Town.

Team News

Altrincham’s keeper Dermot Mee has been called up by Northern Ireland under-21’s and will therefore be unavailable for Saturdays game.

The 19-year-old, who joined us on-loan from Manchester United last month, has been named in the squad that will face Scotland twice in the space of three days for their upcoming international friendlies.

Additionally, Aaron Bennett will also miss out on Saturday after being called up by Wales under-19’s for their last round of European Championship fixtures.

Dan Malone has also been called up this week to Wales under-21s ruling the Stoke midfielder out making it a trio of absentees due to international call-ups

Everyone at Alty wishes Dermot, Aaron and Dan every success representing their countries and looks forward to welcoming them back to The J.Davidson Stadium after their international duties.

Managers Views

In a post-match interview, manager Phil Parkinson gave his views following our 4-1 defeat against Dagenham & Redbridge and spoke on the importance of fan support for the players on Saturday.

About The Opposition

Aldershot Town gained promotion to the Football League in 2007/08 under Gary Waddock, going on to spend five seasons in League Two.

The Shots were then relegated back to non-league football and soon after entered administration in 2013. However, the club have since been revitalised, reaching the National League play-offs in both 2017 and 2018.

In 2021 the club appointed current manager and former player Mark Molesley. Last season Molesley lead Aldershot Town to a 20th place finish in the National League, avoiding relegation by just 9 points.

This season the club has had a steady start, winning three out of their first nine games. However, defeat in their other six has left them further down the table than they would have hoped.

Alty will need to look out for new signings Inih Effiong and Justin Amaluzor who’ve both adapted well to their new team, scoring four goals each in their opening nine games.

Another notable mention goes to Tyler Cordner who scored twice last Saturday from aerial attempts. The central defender will certainly look to challenge Alty from set pieces when The Shots travel up north to face us this Saturday at The J.Davidson Stadium.
