Altrincham welcome newly promoted Boston United to The J.Davidson
Stadium on Saturday as we face the Pilgrims in the Vanarama National League (3pm kick-off).
Setting the Scene
The Robins head into Saturday’s clash on the back of a steady performance at the
Huish Park Stadium last time out.
A competitive affair ended goalless, with neither Altrincham nor Yeovil testing the
opposition goalkeeper on a regular basis. A front-footed second-half performance
from Alty made them look like the favourites to bag a winner, but they were unable unable to break the deadlock.
Regardless, after two late defeats already this season, a point on the road is a step in the right direction. It leaves Alty in 16th with 11 points in our opening nine fixtures.
Our opponents at the weekend have faced a testing set of fixtures upon their return to the National League, earning eight points against strong opposition. Ian
Culverhouse’s men are the only team to have beaten league leaders York City so far this season, and they also picked up an impressive 3-0 win away at Sutton United.
The Pilgrims may be sat 18th in the league table, but their impressive form away from home to start the season will make them very tough to beat.
The Gaffer
“When you’re travelling up the road with this group of players, they really make you believe you’re going to win games, and that’s what keeps you going.
“I truly believe that championships are built on defences, so we look a lot sturdier
than we ever have in this division, and forwards win you games and we’ve definitely got forwards that can win us games.
“When we can put it all together, and remember within the first ten games of the
season we’ve played some really tough teams, we’ve been found wanting by small, small margins, last minute goals and that can’t continue – and it won’t. We’ll continue to get better and the goals will come for us.”
Last time against Boston
August 2020 – The small matter of the Vanarama National League North Promotion Final at York Street.
The Robins came out victorious through a second half goal from Dan Mooney (now a Boston player himself) as Alty made it two promotions in three years against the backdrop of empty stadiums due to covid.
