Newby stunner earns point for Alty
Words Alex Birch - at Hayes Lane
Bromley 2 Altrincham 2
ALTRINCHAM held their nerve to produce when it matter in securing a point at second-placed Bromley in front of the TNT Sport cameras.
Corey Whitely fired a warning shot over for the hosts, who were in the ascendancy early doors. Ethan Ross denied Bes Topalloj with a low block from a corner before Callum Reynolds headed over the Alty bar while unmarked.
This was all in the opening 10 minutes, along with a Michael Cheek effort that was shanked wide from a narrow angle.
Then, with their first real attack, the Robins hit the front on 13 minutes. Marcus Dackers played in Chris Conn-Clarke and the playmaker's low cross was turned home by Alex Newby to send the travelling fans into raptures.
The game settled down a little after the goal, as the wind swirled around Hayes Lane, making any high balls difficult to judge.
The final real chance of the half fell again to Cheek, whose shot from the right channel was brilliantly stopped by Ross; Bromley continuing to look menacing as the clock ticked over to 45 minutes.
The game turned markedly in Bromley's favour less than three minutes into the second half when Elliot Osborne was sent off for an innocuous-looking second booking.
Understandably with a man advantage, the home side sought to push forward and equalised through a low finish from Olufela Olomola on 56 minutes; the forward sweeping home through a crowded penalty area.
The game threatened to swing again within 90 seconds of the goal when Bromley's Jude Arthurs received a straight red after a rash challenge on George Wilson in the middle of midfield.
Undeterred, the hosts took the lead on 63 minutes. Olomola with his second off a low centre from the dangerous Bes Topalloj.
Home substitute Lewis Leigh was inches away from a third soon after, as the Ravens continued to look the more threatening in the final third
Phil Parkinson introduced Regan Linney for the final 20 minutes, followed by Dior Angus, in an attempt to force a way back into the match.
Angus smashed an effort off the bar with time expiring, and that looked to be that. But Newby had other ideas.
Justin Amaluzor won a free kick 25 yards out, deep in stoppage time, and Alty's number 30 stepped up to curl a top bins purler beyond Stevens to grab the visitors a point.
