Match preview as in-form Robins face another tough test at free-scoring Fylde

By Joe Brayne

Altrincham sets their sights on a perfect Bank Holiday weekend as they head to Mill Farm to face AFC Fylde in the Vanarama National League this Monday (3pm kick-off).

The Robins' confidence is soaring after an astonishing second-half display against Chesterfield secured an unlikely three points on Saturday.

In what is turning out to be a regular occurrence this season, another Alty super-sub stepped up to provide the difference. This time, it was summer signing Dior Angus who came off the bench to score the crucial brace and ensure we maintained our unbeaten start to the 2023-24 season.

Anticipating the quick turnaround for Monday's fixture, Altrincham manager Phil Parkinson emphasised the squad’s preparedness, saying: “The preparation started midweek, we were already working on the shape and personnel that we are planning to play against Fylde.

“We will go to Fylde with a game plan that we have been working on and we will touch on it tomorrow.”

About the Opposition

It has been a mixed bag for AFC Fylde since their return to the National League this season. The 2022-23 National League North champions notched an impressive home victory over Kidderminster, but have continually struggled to keep 11 players on the pitch – receiving red cards in three of their five league matches so far.

In a spirited performance against the league leaders, the Coasters fell to a 3-1 away defeat against Hartlepool on Saturday. A first-half added-time goal from Gold Omotayo threatened a shock comeback, but Pools forward Mani Dieseruvwe secured his brace shortly after the break.

Despite boasting the league's leakiest defence, having conceded 13 goals, Fylde carry an attacking prowess that promises high-scoring encounters. Prior to Saturday’s loss, the Coasters were on a four-game streak of netting two goals in each match.

Swiss striker Omotayo and attacking midfielder Nick Haughton stand out as our hosts’ greatest attacking flair, with the former’s imposing presence proving to be a persistent threat to opposing defences.
