Nash next up, with some familiar faces - here's your match preview

Words by Joe Ward

Altrincham take a break from league action this Tuesday when we host Curzon Ashton in the third round of the Isuzu FA Trophy at The J.Davidson Stadium (7.45pm kick-off).

Following two consecutive postponements due to a frozen pitch - one in the league, the other in the Trophy - the Robins finally return to action for what promises to be an exhilarating Greater Manchester derby.

In our last game against Maidstone United, Connor Jennings underlined why the boss extended his loan contract as the forward grabbed a vital goal in a highly-impressive 3-2 victory.

The win lengthened our unbeaten run to five games, and though it was followed by two postponements, manager Phil Parkinson should have little difficulty concentrating minds on the task of trying to progress in a competition that we have won twice before.

Meanwhile, our visitors head into the game off the back of two consecutive defeats in the Vanarama National League North.

Nevertheless, Curzon will be looking to recreate the heroics from their second-round tie against Southport which they won 3-1 away from home. And with former Robins favourites like Tom Peers, Josh Hancock and Connor Hampson doubtless relishing a return to The J.Davidson Stadium, they are sure to be fired up for this one.

About The Opposition

Curzon Ashton compete in the sixth tier of English football and, therefore, head into Tuesday’s game as underdogs on paper. However, as many will remember from our countless clashes over the years, this is a test that the Robins should not take lightly.

The Nash currently sit 20th in the National League North table, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Despite a convincing victory over Southport in the last round, they have only managed one win in four games since then.

Following a 2-0 defeat to Darlington in their last game, Curzon Ashton will likely head into Tuesday night’s fixture with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. If they succeed in knocking us out, the Nash will progress further than they have ever been in the competition.

However, having only managed to score six goals in their last nine games, our visitors will have to bring their shooting boots if they hope to beat an Alty backline that seems to strengthen game by game.
