Altrincham return to The J.Davidson Stadium for the first time in almost a month as we host our Remembrance Day game against Southend United in the Vanarama National League on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Setting the Scene

Altrincham pulled off a miraculous comeback in their previous fixture by overturning a 3-1 deficit against Solihull Moors to seal a 3-3 draw at the ARMCO Arena.

First-half goals from Alex Whitmore and Sam Bowen gave the hosts an early two-goal advantage before Regan Linney scored his first goal of the day to halve the lead. Jack Stevens looked to kill all Alty’s momentum when he restored the Moors’ superior position in the game, but a creative headed finish from Linney and a clinical late strike from Matty Kosylo earned the Robins a point on the road.

The draw means that Altrincham have not lost in their previous four matches in the league, and they sit just four points behind the playoffs in 10th position. Our opponents find themselves just three points further back in 15th, with Southend winning 21 points from their 17 games so far.

Kevin Maher led the Shrimpers to a remarkable ninth-placed finish in the 2023/24 campaign, overcoming financial difficulties and a 10-point deduction, but his side are yet to find the same form this season.

Despite producing notable performances to win against top teams like Rochdale and Solihull Moors, they’re yet to ignite and produce the run of results.

The Gaffer

“They always are, aren’t they, really difficult games [against Southend]. Kevin Maher has a way of setting up and he’s a top manager and someone I’ve got a lot of respect for in the division. It might not seem that way when we’re on the sidelines against each other but I do respect him, I always like the way his teams play.

“But when you go against them they become your competitors and we’ll do everything we can to win, as they will. Southend are another very good team who haven’t had the start to the season that they wanted, but everyone in this division knows when Southend get it going they’re going to be a really difficult team to beat so we need to make sure we get everything right.”

Last time against Southend

February 2024 – Southend got the better of The Robins in the last match-up between the two sides.

An early goal from Chris Conn-Clarke put Altrincham in the driving seat, but two quick goals shortly before half-time from Harry Cardwell and Wesley Fonguck gave Southend a 2-1 victory at Roots Hall.
