Alty suffer narrow defeat to Manchester Laces

By Ben Edwards

Altrincham FC Women didn’t reach the performance and intensity levels they have become accustomed to, suffering a 1-0 defeat against a strong Manchester Laces side at Partington Sports Village.

Manchester Laces, second in the North West Women’s Regional League Division One South, looked the better side, particularly in the first half where the Robins looked off the pace.

It was a game of limited chances, though the visitors took their after 16 minutes. Grace Carlin drove down the right flank, finishing beyond Olivia Kaleta at a narrow angle.

Carlin also had an attempt from 20-yards easily saved by the Altrincham shot-stopper, before Sian Webster headed straight at Kaleta from a corner. That was all worth noting from a first-half where Manchester Laces’ physically seemed to shake Altrincham.

Kaleta was only really called into action once in the second half, just two minutes after the break when she pushed away Katy Newton’s long range effort.

When Altrincham did get joy, it came from the right-hand side. Nat Lowe’s header unleashed Georgia McKnight down the wing, but she fired over whilst off balance.

Again on the right wing, McKnight linked up well with Ash Gilmore, who impressed at right-back on her return to first-team action. Her cross evaded everyone and almost dropped in at the back post.

That was the final opportunity of a low-quality affair, with Altrincham now looking to bounce back for the most important game in their history next Sunday – an Adobe Women’s FA Cup third round tie against York City Ladies at The J.Davidson Stadium.

Tickets for the game are available online here. If you're looking for hospitality click here to book for £25, and we also have a match ball sponsorship package.

With thanks to team sponsor Aaron & Partners and match sponsor Barleycorn for the support.
