Altrincham FC Women fall to second half Runcorn fightback

Altrincham 1-4 Runcorn Linnets

Altrincham’s run in the Cheshire FA Women's County Cup came to an end at the quarter-final stage as they succumbed to a ruthless second half fightback by Runcorn Linnets at Partington Sports Village.

The Robins took the lead just 16 minutes into the game, when a perfectly weighted through ball found the feet of Emily Rutter, who with neat control slotted the ball into the bottom left corner past Linnets goalkeeper Alex Bellfield.

Altrincham remained in control throughout the first half, creating many opportunities for themselves, and went into the break still with the one-goal advantage.

However, it didn't take Runcorn long after the break to strike back, as just four minutes into the second half they had their equaliser. An inswinging corner came in, and Altrincham failed to clear their lines, allowing the ball to be slammed home from close range. This would just be the start of a ruthless second half for the visitors.

Within twelve minutes of their equaliser, the Linnets had a second, this time coming from a long throw. As the ball came in, the Robins weren’t quick enough to clear their lines again, allowing a well-struck shot to nestle in the back of the net, giving the visitors the lead for the first time in the game.

Following this, Runcorn really came into their own. Their third came from a wonderful strike that thundered into the back of the net, giving Olivia Kaleta no chance from about 25 yards.

Altrincham still continued to create some great chances for themselves; however, they just didn't have the stroke of luck needed, and the Linnets again took advantage of a corner, allowing them to scramble home their fourth, sending them through to the semi-finals.

The Robins now turn their attention back to league action when they make the trip to Warrington Town next Sunday.
